January 2004

Happy 2004!! Welcome to our January 2004 newsletter!

WHAT'S NEW WITH US...
It was our first Christmas in our new home. We have been blessed to be able to have room to put up all our decorations and have two live Christmas trees and one small artificial one. This is the also the first year we had two un-balled, cut trees. In the past, we have gotten 'balled and burlapped' trees. After transplanting the trees outside, they eventually died. My kids tell me I'm going to kill the tree anyway, so we might as well get a cut one! How cruel! Now don't get me wrong - I'm not a tree hugger! But it just seems a waste to cut down a tree that's been growing for years to have in your house for a few weeks and then throw out! It's the 'frugal-ness' in me! I even ask for plants, as opposed to 'cut' flowers for Mother's Day!

But, Mark and the kids really wanted them, so we got them. Yes, them. We got two. One big main tree in our great room near the fireplace and one small one in the dining room (since there's no table in there yet, we have plenty of room!). I wanted to have multiple trees like the Victorians did, so I decided to decorate the tree in the dining room as our 'American Tree' (as David and Victoria call it) and put it in the window. It's decorated in red, white and blue lights and two flags on top. It is to serve as a reminder to those in the military serving our country right now and to remember those who have served in the military to keep our freedom and of course to our forefathers who GOT our freedom.

Well, it seemed that my compromising paid off. Instead of the usual pear basket my parents send (which I LOVE!), they decided to send us two LIVING trees! TWO! We received one early one day and then later on that night another package arrived and it was another tree! Thinking it was a mistake, I called my parents and my mother informed me, no it wasn't a mistake, they meant to send two! I can't wait to plant them - maybe we'll get a professional landscaper to do it this time so I don't kill them!

What an incredible month it has been at our church. Our teens were involved in a wonderful clowning production. The church reaches out and invites the community to share in the fun, with an awesome message of God's love for us. In the end, thousands of balloons fell down from the ceiling and we all sang "Happy Birthday, Jesus!"

The Sunday before Christmas we had our Christmas play. In brief, it's the story of Scrooge after he was visited by the three ghosts. He meets three angels and Scrooge gets saved. It was very dramatic. Mark played Gabriel, complete in a long white gown trimmed with gold accents. David, Victoria and myself joined the chorus for some Christmas carols. It was amazing to see how it all pulled together.

The flu has been rampant in our area (thank God, not in our family!), but our poor pastor had it for the Christmas Eve candlelight service and all Christmas day. We pray that you are well. Remember, keep your immune system up and take your Barley Max!

Victoria Faith Brodsky was baptized by Pastor Peppy DuTart on December 14th! Praise God!

Ever since the Fair and the 4-H Gingerbread House competition, our kids caught the 'gingerbread bug' - especially the older ones!

Our son, Eddie has no problem climbing up our high and steep roof to put up lights! He did a great job!

Eddie has been busy learning and serving with the police cadets. Here is a picture of him in his uniform on the day he helped direct traffic at the Christmas parade.

Our Airedale, Clifford, got his Christmas present a couple of weeks early - a big cozy bed!

A HEALTHY RECIPE FROM LINDA'S KITCHEN
(I found this recipe in October and made it for my mother-in-law. It turned out so good that I made it for Thanksgiving at my parent's. Everyone loved it! Even Cassie who 'thinks' she hates squash!)
BUTTERNUT SQUASH & APPLE CASSEROLE
Ingredients:
1 butternut squash (about 2 lbs.)
2 apples, cored, peeled, sliced (I used Granny Smiths)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1 Tbs. flour
1/4 tsp. cinnamon

Peel, seed, and cut squash into small slices. Place squash & apple slices in a baking dish, about 11 x 7 incles. Blend remaining ingredients with fork or pastry cutter until crumbly. Distribute crumbs over squash and apple. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes. Enjoy!

PRAYER REQUESTS
We truly believe in the power of prayer and ask that you remember us with the following requests:
  • For the Lord to bless us with another child in 2004.
  • For more opportunities to serve Him and be a light to those around us.

PRAISES
We certainly couldn't ask for prayer requests without telling you of some answered prayers! How could we give God the glory if we didn't share! We praise Him for:
  • Our daughter Victoria was baptized this month!
  • Opportunities to serve Him through our church -- Mark is now 'full time' on the worship team.
  • A wonderful, healthy and memory-making Christmas with our children and church family.
  • Blessing Mark with plenty of web sites to build - keeping him home with us!

COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
We appreciate all comments and suggestions you may have for Brodsky Ministries. Please feel free to give them here! Thank you!
